How to Find Your Dell Service Tag

Your Dell Service Tag is the key to checking warranty, getting support, and ordering parts. Here's exactly where to find it.

What Is a Dell Service Tag?

A Dell Service Tag is a unique 7-character alphanumeric identifier assigned to every Dell device at the factory. It is used by Dell's support systems to look up your device's exact configuration, warranty status, and service history. Without it, getting accurate support from Dell is nearly impossible.

Where to Find Your Dell Service Tag

On the Device Itself

The most reliable place to find your Service Tag is on a physical sticker attached to the device. The location varies by product type:

  • Laptops: On the bottom panel, usually near the battery area or on a label inside the battery compartment.
  • Desktops: On the side panel or rear of the tower.
  • Monitors: On the back panel or the bottom stand.
  • Servers: On a pull-out tag at the front of the chassis.

The sticker typically shows both the Service Tag (7 characters) and the Express Service Code (a longer numeric version of the same identifier).

In Windows (Without the Physical Sticker)

If the sticker is worn off or you don't have the device in front of you, you can retrieve the Service Tag through Windows:

  1. Press Win + R, type cmd, and press Enter.
  2. In the command prompt, type: wmic bios get serialnumber
  3. Press Enter. The Service Tag appears in the output.

Alternatively, open the Dell SupportAssist application if it is installed — it displays your Service Tag on the home screen.

In the Dell BIOS

Restart your computer and press F2 during boot to enter the BIOS setup. The Service Tag is displayed on the main information page.

On the Original Packaging

If you still have the original box, the Service Tag is printed on the product label alongside the model number and shipping barcode.

Why the Service Tag Matters for Warranty

Dell's warranty lookup tool uses the Service Tag to pull up your exact device record. This tells you the warranty start date, expiry date, the type of coverage (on-site, mail-in, or phone support), and whether any extensions have been purchased. Entering a generic model number will not give you this information — only the Service Tag provides device-specific warranty data.
